Created during a residency in Wanning, Grafi-Bashu Mask brings together visual elements from the Grassfields mask traditions of Cameroon and the mask culture of Bashu in Sichuan. The resulting hybrid form becomes a symbol of cultural dialogue, where distinct histories meet and coexist within a single ceremonial presence.
The cowrie shell serves as a bridge between continents, evoking African systems of value and spirituality while also echoing Wanning's enduring connection to the sea. Through layered symbols and vibrant forms, the work celebrates exchange, memory, and the creative possibilities that emerge when cultures encounter one another.
