Even Angels i
The imagery of flight has always fascinated me; the beauty and freedom of it. It inspires me to create magical things. However, as beautiful as a piece of art may be, the sad irony of where I am living right now, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, is that freedom of movement is a scarce commodity here.
This, the heart of all the Abrahamic religions, is at the same time one of the most disputed places in the world. Angels exist in all three of the Abrahamic religions; they are guardians and warriors; bringers of good news. In our current context, it's not too difficult to imagine how Even Angels would struggle to overcome such solid and harsh barriers.
Not many people realise that Bethlehem is in the West Bank, surrounded by the separation wall. The many Palestinians who live in the shadow of The Wall, under Occupation, today, cannot move with the freedom of those shepherds, wise men and scores of others, who were believed to have visited, to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
This original piece was created entirely with upcycled materials; the canvas is reused, the wings of the angel are crafted with papier-mâché made from egg-cartons, and the wall is cut out of cardboard. The artwork is acrylic, pencil, gold metallic leaf, wire and pen and ink
