This painting was inspired by Hope, the wolf whose torture and killing by Cody Roberts in March 2024, Wyoming ,became a painful symbol of the violence that humans continue to inflict upon wildlife.
Rather than representing the act itself, I chose to paint its emotional aftermath: grief, remembrance, and compassion. The woman, wrapped in a protective white mantle, becomes both witness and guardian. Beside her, the wolf gazes directly at the viewer, carrying within her eyes both vulnerability and dignity.
The white drapery evokes purity, mourning, and the fragile hope that compassion may still prevail over cruelty. Through this intimate encounter, I seek to honour not only Hope, but all wild creatures whose lives are threatened by fear, ignorance, and human indifference.
This work is an appeal for empathy. It invites us to reconsider our relationship with animals and to recognise that every act of cruelty towards nature ultimately diminishes our own humanity.
