The Resolution series are an expression of time, where the process of making a colour transition, ultimately track history in the making. The journeys taken from January 1st to December 31st, every year since 2016 are as physical as they are existential: from Colombia to Japan and into the deserts of Oman are also those from self-discovery at silent retreat to the return home for the funeral of a much loved sibling or into national lockdown.
The work grows and takes shape in parallel to the personal and cultural landscape. In the transition from one colour to another lies the transition of life in the past to that in the present. It is preserved in the gestures of the paint, in the gaps of missed days (when no work was made) and in those small notes on the margin where, “Stephen tested + for coronavirus,” carry the weight of meaning for society as much as “I’m spent, can’t shake the melancholy” has personal meaning.
Each imprint of colour is a memory of a day half-forgotten, now abstract—a very human story, for in the empty space ahead, the countdown continues to the next day that will change your life.
This particular piece is ongoing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Life as we had known it has changed dramatically and this piece focuses directly on documenting this moment in history. Covid-19: 314 Days and counting (Brilliant Gold) will be finished only when the pandemic no longer disrupts social life through lockdowns and social restrictions.
As coming years are affected by the novel coronavirus, this work will continue to grow as a series and will document my life through that time. For this reason, the work is not available for sale and is also displayed in the images below, as incomplete and not fully framed.
