Block
by block throughout neighborhoods in Chicago, levels of soil, water and
air pollution are plotted by the Better Government Association of
Illinois. The neighborhood healthcare accessibility is delineated by the
Illinois Department of Public Health. The most poisoned blocks tend to be
in neighborhoods with the poorest healthcare outcomes. This reality has
only been amplified to a tragic level by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Black
#2 (Garfield Manor) painting is where the two different measures by
BGAL and IDPH are abstracted into a two-dimensional shape. Approximately
20 layers of gold paint are rolled onto a linen canvas. The layers of
gold paint are built up till the contrast between the gold of the walls
and the gold of the canvases is just subtle enough to allow for a
precise differentiation in hue. After the gold is the correct hue, the
abstracted silhouettes of these poison neighborhoods are applied with
the oil tar sands. The "depiction" of polluted blocks within Chicago is a
didactic relational statement creating signposts to generate greater
awareness of systemic environmental and healthcare racism.
