Barbara Radziwiłł – The Black Lady
This painting represents Barbara Radziwiłł, Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania, a historical figure surrounded by political intrigue, tragic destiny and enduring legend. In the cultural memory of Lithuania and Eastern Europe she is also known as the Black Lady, a spectral presence said to wander through the castle of Nesvizh after her mysterious death in 1551.
The work was originally conceived within a virtual studio environment, where the composition and symbolic elements were first developed digitally. This virtual research space allowed me to explore historical imagery, architecture and atmosphere before translating the concept into a physical painting. The final artwork therefore emerges from a dialogue between digital imagination and traditional painting practice.
Through a restrained monochrome palette and layered textures, the portrait evokes the fragile boundary between history and myth. The crown, chalice and heraldic symbols refer to power, memory and the persistence of historical narratives in contemporary culture.
