I wanted to speak of unlikely icons. Images that spoke about the heart of America and not the common cliches of popular Americana. A relatively unknown Indian chief, a baseball player long forgotten, one of many motels across the U.S., as well as the once very popular Buick Riviera. I was searching for a round image to counter the round negative spaces when I saw on my shoe the logo of Converse All Stars. An image that not only speaks of my own youth but an image that has grown to be a logo renown worldwide and not only amongst the youth. And of course, one of the first real American heroes, the Rodeo Cowboy. It was these images that spoke to me of the real America, the America known almost exclusively by Americans.
