This collection represents my reflection on social behavioural norms in the context of Chinese culture. The work expresses the two sides of the hypocrite through the screen form of the body. Thereis a duality in the designs, where the front stands for the polite behaviour of the hypocrite, while the back is the hypocritical side covered by the screen. This collection encapsulates the hypocrite’s state of concealing the face behind a bodily screen to convey its core theme. Utilizing the 'screen' as a medium, the work explores its integration with body language, framing three traditional Chinese artifacts—the bamboo hat, the fan, and the cloud shoulder piece—into frozen, wearable fashion sculpture.
The fabrication techniques used are leather wet-moulding for the creation of sculptural shapes and weaving leather and bamboo. The challenge focuses on how the leather transforms from being moulded and stitched over the form of human hands and shifts seamlessly into an open weave with bamboo tips.
Coming from a third generation of a family business in bamboo craft this experience has allowed me to merge my family legacy of craft with my interest in luxury leather goods and bring my Eastern cultural background to the fashion world.
