The Balançoire U. Swing Lily Saillant x Studio Sénac
The Balançoire U. Swing, originally conceived in bamboo by designer Lily Saillant during a creative residency at Domaine de Boisbuchet, is a project that explores the flexibility and strength of wood with its unique U-shaped, bent slats.
Designed for daydreaming and relaxation, this unique, poetic piece of furniture offers comfortable, cocoon-like seating for both indoors and outdoors.
Its soft wood and airy lines create a delicate ornamental sculpture.
The Balançoire U. Swing, crafted by master cabinetmaker Charles Dutelle at Marseille's Studio Sénac editor, is now available in limited editions. Made from Provençal olive ash and chestnut sourced from the Maures massif, it highlights a dedication to local industries and sustainable forest management. Studio Sénac is a proud member of Forêt Modèle de Provence.
To meet mechanical constraints and blend beauty, flexibility, and strength, we chose glued laminated sawn veneer. The cabinetmaker, using his custom-made upright saw, cuts this veneer in his workshop. This technique, done without bending or steaming, retains the physical and aesthetic qualities of solid wood, producing a work of exceptional quality.
The Balançoire U. Swing exemplifies eco-friendly design with its dismountable steel stirrups crafted by Marseille metalworker Manfred Hulin and flax-based hemp rope from Corderie Palus in Corrèze, showcasing a commitment to sustainable materials.
"Originally crafted in bamboo at Domaine de Boisbuchet (Vitra) to celebrate Taiwanese craftsmanship, I'm thrilled to have the chance to reimagine my Balançoire U. Swing for Studio Sénac with a sustainable, eco-design approach. This has involved enhancing the manufacturing process to consider the object's full life cycle and incorporating a handcrafted production process in Provence using local wood species."
