LEARNING TO KNOW JERRY GARCIA Collage on Plywood 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) 2024 In 2019, a friend entrusted me with a commission for a project involving a renowned musician whose name initially failed to resonate with me. Adhering to my personal ethos, I typically engage with subjects that resonate with me, that I understand, and that inspire me. Regrettably, the artist's name didn't ring a bell, so I initially brushed it aside. However, my friend persistently reminded me, expressing a keen interest in acquiring the artwork once completed. Subsequently, as word of the commission spread among acquaintances, inquiries about its progress began to flood in. People extolled the greatness of the artist, sparking a curiosity within me. I delved into researching the individual, and to my amazement, I uncovered a captivating persona. How had I overlooked such a significant figure? With each discovery, I found myself transported to his era, immersed in his life, his music, his stories—a revelation that ignited a profound fascination within me. This musician stood at the forefront of a transformative period, an influential force shaping an entire cultural movement. His impact was so profound that even esteemed institutions like Stanford University dedicated coursework to analyze his influence on American society. My immersion in studying this captivating character delayed the commencement of the artwork. Every day brought forth a new perspective, altering my understanding and vision. Weeks passed as I sketched and reshaped, each iteration reflecting a deeper understanding of the subject. Embarking on the actual creation proved to be a slow and iterative process, as my evolving comprehension of the musician continually influenced my artistic direction. I found myself revising, refining, and reimagining, striving to capture the essence of this multifaceted persona. Upon completion, I realized that my journey to understand the musician was far from over. Thus, I titled the finished piece "Learning to know Jerry Garcia," acknowledging that despite the artwork's completion, my exploration of the character's depth remained ongoing.
