Feathered Formations: Hans Christian Andersen’s The Wild Swans

This garment centers on details. Drawing inspiration from the classic fairytale, The Wild Swans, the dress invites viewers to consider both the detail within the fable and the intricacy of each carefully stitched feather. “Feathered Formations” utilizes countless rose gold coque feathers sewn into draped mesh to emphasize understated texture throughout the garment.  Just as the swans in the fairytale were not really swans, but princes, the dress has been designed to elevate simple feathers beyond their typically imagined form.  When considering creative written works such as The Wild Swans, we are taught to think outside of reality and enter into fantastical worlds.  Art in every form should encourage this mindset, uniting detailed reality with that which is stunningly unthinkable.
