Body, Mind, and Soul: This series of 4 artworks reflect personal stories of the artist following the death of her partner. They explore the relevance and meaning of life within a larger survival narrative of extreme environmental changes, death and disease. The images combine mono-printing and phenomenological drawing approaches. Harmony, discourse and time are experienced by the artist as each mark informs the next. Saunder's image-making practice explores the external; juxtaposing clinical environments with the organic and natural world; and the internal using a pencil to travel across underlying images, meticulously scanning and scrutinising every contour, seeking, and responding to hidden anomalies. The phenomenological nature of these drawings and the act of drawing itself evokes the shared experience of looking for signs of change in the form of disease and decay within the body through medical imaging. This series was designed to be displayed as a series of unframed works on paper. All 4 artworks incorporate oil-based mono-prints and pigment pencil on 300 gsm watercolour paper.
