Baokang Zhao was born in shanghai in 1953 and graduated from the Faculty of Stage-Designing STA (shanghai Theatre Academy) in 1978, he worked as a scenery designer of Wuhan Drama-troupe later at same year. From 1986 to 1995, he worked as a teacher in Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts before coming to Australia as a free-lance artist. He was then employed as the foreign expert professor and director of faculty at Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts at Fudan University in 2006. Since 2012, he worked as the appointed professor at Combined Media of Fine Arts there.
His major Award: won First Prize at "the second International Sand-Sculpture competition (2000)" which organized by the National Tourism Administration of China. Award of Outstanding works in "China Painting Biennale" organized by China Art-research institute in 1994.
Since 1980s, he was a pioneering explorer, an important representative artist and an member for abstract painting in shanghai, exploring from paper works to mixture media, from "mirage" to "Series of Chinese Characters". During 2013 to 2015, he was assigned as the curator by“Shanghai Mingyuan Art Museum”for three exhibitions regarding Shanghai abstract painting, "Homeland", "Nomadism", "Boundaries", the exhibition had profound influences. After 2004, his series works "Flare" had shown that he was an artist who had consistently expanded perspectives to horizons of history of contemporary art, and had realized conceptual painting among his contemporaries. Since 2008, His "Mizige", "Encounter" and other series has fused the differences between Chinese and Western cultures and created a unique visual landscape within.
In 2006, he was employed as the head director of the Faculty of Fine Art Painting in Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, Fudan University. At a time when teaching of Modern Art was scarce and need to be popularized, he had established the first higher academy for comprehensive painting major with nature of experimental art in Shanghai. In more than ten years of teaching practice, he had summarized the teaching experience of modern art and contemporary art. The Book "the Comprehensive Painting Course", in which he had edited for nearly five years, was rated as one of the key projects for undergraduate teaching materials in Shanghai in 2015. it thus had influenced and inspired these students and modern art loves year after year.
Baokang Zhao works had been exhibited in Chinese Art Museum, Shanghai Art Museum, Palace of Fine arts in shanghai, Shanghai Himalayas Museum, Shanghai Biz-art Centre, Shanghai View-point Space (M50), Westlake Museum, Yokohama Art Museum (Japan), Tokyo International Exchange Centre, Art Museum of Tokyo University. GSR Gallery of Taiwan, Washington Art Museum of United States. Chicago Art University, Raymonde Gallery in Paris, Vienna Artist's home, etc. During his stay in Australia, his work had been exhibited in 4A (Asian Contemporary Art Centre) Gallery & Campbelltown art Gallery.
Baokang Zhao is an Artist that had practiced with various forms in fields of visual art and had obtained remarkable achievement, he is also a pioneer that aims high and never stopped self-revolution.
