Working primarily with photography, her practice begins from personal experience and explores the relationships between identity, family, everyday space, and society.
Rather than treating these experiences as binary oppositions, Zhang is interested in the ways they coexist and overlap. She does not seek a singular or "pure" version of reality; instead, her work inhabits the ambiguous space where reality, memory, and imagination intersect.
She is particularly interested in how personal histories are continually rewritten through perception, cultural imagery, and familial narratives, and how photography can become a medium for holding these unresolved complexities.
Her major projects include Factory Drifter and Mountain Dance Chronicle, exploring childhood memory, industrial landscapes, ethnic rituals, embodied experience, and shifting identities, reconstructing the complex relationship between individual experience and broader social realities.
