He was born in Erzurum in 1972. He completed his high school education at Ankara Gazi High School, one of Ankara's long-established institutions, between 1986 and 1989. In order to carry his passion for art to an academic level, he enrolled in Gazi University, Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education, from which he graduated in 1994. To expand his artistic depth into an interdisciplinary dimension, he completed his Master's degree in the Department of Ceramics at Çankırı Karatekin University, Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture in 2023.
Alongside his teaching career since 1994, through which he has made it a mission to pass his knowledge and aesthetic vision to young talents, he has been providing art education at the Fine Arts High School for many years. Continuing his own creative production within his studio at the school—intertwined with his identity as an educator—Zeğerek has remained a representative of the Gazi University school of art, participating in the 24th, 27th, 29th, and 32nd annual "In the Footsteps of the Gazi" (Gazinin İzinde) alumni exhibitions.
Artistic Philosophy
Zeğerek’s art is a high-tension bridge built between the monumental heritage of history and the fleeting aesthetics of the digital age. In his works, classical icons such as the Ancient Warrior and David collide with today’s chaotic consumer culture and technological pace to find a new form. While fracturing the traditional painting tradition with layers of Pop-Art, the artist constructs a hybrid universe defined as "Cyber-Pop" by utilizing screen printing, acrylic, and airbrush techniques.
Particularly in his series structured around the philosophy of "Bokeh," he brings the blurry and hidden riches—those often overlooked elements lying outside the focal point—to the center of the canvas. This approach is an exaltation of the pure energy of light and ambiguity in a modern world where clarity is imposed. For Okan Zeğerek, painting is an ambitious journey into the limitless memory of light and the invisible depths of the frame; an attempt to capture the aura beyond what is merely visible and to break free from the oppression of the object.
