One of the greatest joys of my artistic life is the freedom I feel working across media. In the spirit of Ingre, I have always found that the more strings to the bow, the richer the harmony. Whilst all of us in the arts get to relish the feeling of watching our ideas take corporeal form, it is quite something else to watch the many expressions of that idea across forms. To feel like I can be seen and heard for my multitudes is healing in a world that seems progressively more dedicated to reducing us each to a single data point. That is what gave rise to this series, built around the theme of “film”. It expresses the passion I feel for my work in film, whilst also allowing me to give shape in the medium of oils and acrylics to what can only be implied on celluloid. One avenue of artistic expression allows me to better enjoy, understand, and share the other.
My name is Wang Yang, and I currently reside in China. I have previously worked as a director and screenwriter in New York, Hong Kong, and Beijing, focusing on film and advertising. My cross-disciplinary background has allowed me a unique perspective on artistic practice. I have found that whatever creative field I find myself in, narrative is always my guiding light, reflecting cinematic storytelling. Not only that, I have consistently found, both as an artist and as a woman, that people prefer it when you present a single side to them. As such, my work presents a narrative where I am explicitly more than one thing, as both a statement of personal truth and steadfast defiance.
