Oleksandra Voronina was born in 1990 in Kyiv, Ukraine, and is based in Sweden. She received a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture of Ukraine in 2016. In addition to her Master’s degree, she completed a postgraduate assistantship / internship, which provided hands-on experience in artistic practice and teaching.
She is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and Konstnärernas Riksorganisation in Sweden.
She works at the intersection of artistic practice, research, and social context. Technically, she works with different media, with a main focus on easel graphics integrated into installation-based works, as well as painting, which has become the most accessible approach in the conditions of a changing life as an expatriate.
Her works are often divided into fragments to emphasize the turbulence of life and the constant flow of information. She explores how materials can reflect lived experience and perception, and how images, narratives, and aesthetic strategies function as instruments of influence.
She addresses themes of loneliness, isolation, detachment, migration, collective trauma, and politics.
Her own experience of revolutions, war instigated by russia, and cultural oppression has shaped her artistic focus on culture as an instrument of influence and as a site of resistance.
She uses artistic production as a way to analyze how visual culture shapes perception, memory, and political positioning. This practice also informs her lectures, presentations, interviews with artists, and participation in public discussions on russification and the role of visual culture in political life.
She is currently researching the russification of Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian artists who have fought to preserve national identity, conducting interviews, writing, and giving lectures.
Her works have been used to illustrate two books and are held in private and public collections in Ukraine and abroad. She has received several awards in Ukraine, Germany, and Italy and actively participates in exhibitions, art fairs, and charity events.
