Mar Villegas is a Mexican artist based in London. She has a Master’s degree in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art. Positioned at the intersection of autobiographical contemporary theory and traditional ceramic botanical art, Mar’s practice explores narratives through intricate, small flower sculptures. Individually caressed as delicately and thinly as possible, her pieces translate into intimate, tactile forms that often retain her skin imprints. Shaped by repetition and ritual, her porcelain flowers appear on the verge of breaking, yet stubbornly stand. Her creative process is inspired by a sense of persistence embedded into her day to day life. Flowers and petals serve as both, offerings and vessels of human experience. Through them, Mar re-tells her story, opening space for viewers to reflect and find their own insights within the work.
Mar’s work encourages contemplation in intimacy and quietness. She aims to twist public dynamics, instead of being impressed by something majestic and dazzling, she wants the public to take some time and care to search for small, hidden discoveries. Light is essential to her work. She enjoys using its temporality in conversation with her porcelain pieces, resulting in time specific work that comes to life when the sun moves through it.
