Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for
me. I feel a constant urge to create, to capture what is there. I often do this
in a very basic way, literally printing shapes and structures from nature.
Other times my work takes on a certain abstraction and a plant, moss, mountain
or animal has been the reason for a work. The flora is always in motion, it
blooms, grows, dies and takes different appearances in this whole process.
With
the help of the etching press I can capture these apparitions very precisely.
They have been rendered almost photographically, forever. My impressions of
nature turn into impressions under the etching press. Sometimes I use other
(photo)graphic techniques such as toyobo, cyanotype, risograph or screen
printing.
Forests
and mountains have a huge attraction for me. I have done long treks in remote
and high areas such as the Himalayas, the Andes, Iceland, Patagonia, Mongolia,
Alaska, the Alps and the Dolomites. Getting lost endlessly creates a certain
experience. For me as an artist, walking is more inextricably linked to my
artistry. Walking provides relaxation, peace and space. This gives me new ideas
and insights. Like that one time, just before the end of the tree line in the
Himalayas in Nepal, I found beautiful loose bark that had to be taken home.
My main work is free work, but I also make admissioned
work and recently made a work for the municipality (public space) of Amsterdam, more information in this link:
