About Ionil
I was born on March 20, 1985 in a small coastal town. It's a beautiful, warm, sunny town. There is also glaring poverty. When I was very young I was fascinated with Italian art in particular Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo and Giotto and the renaissance movement. I started drawing the familiar objects that surrounded me. My father gave me plenty of encouragement in developing my drawing and took me to a few drawing classes. I tried recreating the famous paintings that I loved. When I was 12 my town went through a civil war. A year later many refugees came to my town fleeing war. I was too young to understand but my mind still registered many bleak scenes. My family moved to Athens, Greece soon after. The city was very welcoming and helped my family and I see things from a different perspective. I continued to draw and at age 14 I started recreating Greek paintings and sculpture. I was inspired by classical art. My favourite Greek artists were Phidias and Praxiteles. After finishing Art Middle School my journey took me to Milan, Italy. I was very attracted to the theatre and opera and studied Theatre Scenography. Whilst I was studying, In the Brera district in Milan I met many other aspiring artists with big dreams. Besides classical art I started drawing contemporary art focusing on the different ways of interpreting objects. Many of my friends at the time were working on similar notions. I really enjoyed working on this and dedicated a lot of time to it. After receiving my Masters I went through an isolated phase and spent most of my time at the Braidense National Library. I mostly read books on physics (mostly astronomy), algebra and a little art. I always wanted to find my own way to connect physics and art. I was absorbed with physics and was looking for a way to interpret these theories through my art. In 2013 I returned to my home town and was offered a position to teach Art History. I taught for 3 years and moved around a bit after that. After that I preferred to stay and read in the house and not go anywhere. Around December of 2019 I started having visions which I drew immediately after on paper. After accumulating 70 pieces I came to London to see an old friend. Here I decided to digitise what I had drawn. The pieces are designed to temporarily detach the observer from physical reality and transport them to alternate spaces.
