Romi Thornton is a multimedia artist born in London, United Kingdom. She grew up in a seaside town in North Yorkshire, UK where she studied an education in Art and Design, Mathematics and English Literature. She went on to receive a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from Leeds Arts University in 2019. In 2023, Romi graduated with a First Class Honours in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, University Arts London. During her time at university, Romi's practice involved the exploration of corporate culture and its aesthetics through 3D-rendered animation, video installation and performance.
Since graduating, Romi has taken part in an exhibition at The Muse Gallery in Notting Hill, London and the exhibition 'Funny Stuff' (2023) at Andrew Logan Projects, Brooklyn, New York in September 2023. In January 2024, Romi began a six month artist residency at The Muse Gallery and Studio in Notting Hill, London where she has developed her artistic practice and taken part in an exhibition in January 2024 where she presented the video installation 'Polymerised Horizons: Discovering Beauty in a Plastic Abyss' (2024) and an exhibition in June-July 2024 where she presented the audio-visual installation 'Causal Nexus: A Confession About my Self-Fulfilling Insomnia' (2024). Her practice incorporates the aesthetics and processes of meme-making, marketing, gaming and social media. During her time at The Muse Residency, her research has taken a more introspective look at our relationship with the online world, nostalgia and the consumer's yearning for it as an escape.
Romi is looking forward to developing her artistic practice further as she comes to the end of her current residency and plans to partake in more exhibitions over Summer and has plans to set up an exhibition in collaboration with artist William Brown.
