Thierry Esther, a talented artist hailing from the
island of La Réunion, can be considered the French equivalent of Jean-Michel
Basquiat. Similar to the American artist, Thierry experienced a tumultuous childhood
when his family relocated to France when he was just 8 years old. It was during
the landing of a Boeing on the Orly tarmac that he set foot on French soil for
the first time. His mother, Valentine, a fashion designer in La Réunion, had to
change careers, as continuing her role as a designer was impossible. However,
she quickly realized that her son Thierry had a creative gift and encouraged
him to explore his artistic potential by taking him to visit museums,
exhibitions, and art galleries.
Thierry has created several impactful series of
artworks that have captivated the public and sparked reflection. His first
series, titled "Art Propre," demonstrates how he uses household
products to build and deconstruct works of art. He has also created a series on
the famous opera singer Maria Callas, titled "Painting, Music, and
Dust."
The latest series focuses on Japan, reflecting his
perception of this ancient yet modern country, through cherry blossoms and the
impact of nuclear energy. This exhibition was initially scheduled for 2020, but
unfortunately, the pandemic postponed it to 2023.
His upcoming artistic project, titled
"Destruction & Reconstruction of Self," will reveal the process
by which the artist, having deconstructed his being, attempts to rebuild it
through his art. This series will highlight the beauty of his journey of
reconstruction after two years of destroying his life.
Like Basquiat, although Thierry is often misunderstood
by the art world, he nevertheless has a dedicated following that follows him in
his creative adventures. His provocative works stimulate thought and
discussion, testifying to the depth of his talent as an artist. Both artists
share a unique and original vision of art and a capacity to explore
controversial subjects with a provocative approach.
