Born in
Rotterdam, Anja has lived in Hengelo ( ov ) since 1989 with her husband and
later 3 children. Not only did she become
a mother 25 years ago, she also came into contact with clay, which marked the
beginning of a development that has led to her present-day artistic calling.
The birth of
this 4th " child" was during Ludmilla van der Spoel's ceramics
lessons. After a few years, she was gripped by the mosaic virus in Venice. She
soon started combining these techniques.
After
playing in childhood, art training in Driebergen gave her a solid foundation to
grow further. During this education, she also started to study different glass
techniques. The transparency, the colours, the fragility of pâte de verre,
versus the earthiness of clay makes these materials reinforce each other.
Clay is her
basic material. Wanting to work larger, she learned techniques in Belgium (
under the guidance of Katrin Dekoninck) that give her the freedom to sculpt
monumentally. By polychroming her sculptures, the skin of the sculpture remains
more natural.
The beauty
of impermanence and life itself are her inspiration. Anja wants her sculptures
to reflect the essence, capture emotions in clay, and make the unconscious
visible.
