Painter. World traveler. Art history lover. Poet, singer, songwriter, guitarist, illustrator, reader, runner, dancer, polyglot– Charlie Swerdlow is a complex and passionate young artist. Here’s his story in brief– Swerdlow grew up on the rocky northern coast of America. From a young age he showed a passion for all things creative. Studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Swerdlow found his love of art history and caught the love of travel during a semester in southern France. Since college his diverse projects have included book illustrations, concept art, graphic design, museum work, and fine art. He has visited historic sites, ruins, natural wonders, cities, and museums across Israel, Egypt, Peru, Mexico, and the USA. These travels have inspired the Travel Symphony series, in which he’s combined many scenes into each elaborate composition, to form connections and juxtapositions, and reflect the way one memory links with another. He uses no photography, preferring to rely entirely on memory and imagination to give his works an authentic, personal, unique visual language. In this he’s attempted to create a new visual language, a sort of dream landscape, physically impossible, yet capturing a truth about the interweaving nature of memory, experience, and imagination. Swerdlow is also a performer and songwriter in a folk band called the Shank Painters.
