Fabrizio Sorrentino was born in Rome in 1980. He graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome in 2004 and spent seven years working in the studio of Bruno Liberatore, a sculptor of the Italian monumental tradition. That is where he understood how much matter actually weighs, and what it means to occupy a space. It wasn't an endpoint: it's the reason he can now work on a computer-generated form knowing exactly what there is to lose.
Trans-materia, his current research, came out of a dead end rather than a theory. For years he used 3D printing to simulate; then he stopped, and began treating the printed piece as raw stock — something to attack by hand, not to hand over as it comes. He prints the form in PLA and works it with heat, deforming it with tools he builds himself, the same way the wax model was once finished before casting. The file dictates a structure that is repeatable and cold. His intervention breaks it: the heat gives way, the tool bites, and out of that margin of error comes something the calculation hadn't foreseen. What remains is a single sculpture, one that can't be remade the same way twice.
