Sophie Manessiez is a French-Canadian artist trained in visual arts, communication, and ceramic craft techniques (Montreal, 2021). After a career in event planning, she devoted herself fully to ceramics in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in Quebec, Ontario, the United States, and at the Grand Palais in Paris during the Révélations Biennale, where it received enthusiastic acclaim. She is a member of the Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec.
Her contemporary practice revolves around porcelain and stoneware, which she assembles into works that are both fragile and powerful. She explores the tensions between uniformity and individuality, questioning the relationship between the individual and the collective through networks of repeated, woven, modular forms. Her “porcelain weavings” embody a dialogue between lightness and structure, formal delicacy and material resilience. Each element, both unique and interconnected, evokes the insociable sociability of the living – that paradoxical human need for connection and autonomy.
