David Solomita is a native of New York City currently living and working in San
Francisco. He received his BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and MS,
Educational Leadership in the Arts from Bank Street College of Education.
Solomita has a varied and eclectic background but throughout his life and career has
sought a central aesthetic that continually surfaces through his artwork. His artistic
endeavors began at a young age as a creator of short films and continued into college
at RIT where graduated with a degree in Photography as a Fine Art. Much of his work
has been focused on large-format pieces starting with painting and screenprinting on 11'
x 7' canvases. This early work is a distant echo of his current photography which uses
paper, light and color to create ethereal sculptural objects. Once photographed, these
images are printed and hung in large-scale to be viewed and experienced as an
immersive experience.
Throughout his life he has had a constant aesthetic which revolves around light, color and volume which he uses to create unique spaces. For the most part these are paper studies or sculptures that are illuminate with multiple light sources and enhanced with colored gels. The work is an attempt to create environments for people to inhabit upon viewing and experiencing them. Each unique image represents one space to be lived in and played with, it is only when you look away that one is grounded in a less comforting reality.
He has taught at the College Level at Parsons School of Design and many of the Art
Schools in and around NYC. Additionally, he was the Director of Continuing Education
for Parsons School of Design from 2001-2005. The disciples he has taught include
Foundation Art, Animation Design, Lasers in Art, Video Production, Digital Design etc.
David Solomita was one of the finalists of Arte Laguna Prize 15 Edition. His work was exhibited at the Arsenale of Venice from October to November 2022.
