Ksenia Sofronova was born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Since the young age she was very passionate about different forms of performance art including theatre, dance and music. During her school years she participated in various amature devised theatre shows as well as being professionally involved with Musical Theatre ‘Karambol’ in Saint Petersburg where she had a taste of what is the life of professional actor can be. Her school studies were mainly focused on humanity subjects such as languages, history, literature and philosophy. Being raised in Saint Petersburg also gave her a broad cultural education in terms of opportunity to visit big collections of art and sculptures in Saint Petersburg museums, listen to the best examples of world music and watch great dancers, singers and actors to do their craft on stage at various theatres in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. After school graduation, at the age of 18, Ksenia has moved to London, UK, to pursue further studies. At first attended a college, where she had an intensive two years studies taking classes on philosophy, history, music and drama, and at the age of 20, in 2014 she has finally decided to pursue an artistic career. Ksenia had a place and studied at the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance in London, taking the course of European Theatre Arts. Her studies were mainly focused on collaborative and devised approach to performance making and physical training of contemporary performer. During her studies, she also had an opportunity to study in Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain; where she had a chance to experience an artistic freedom, to start writing her own texts and to fully embrace different expressive forms such as flamenco and movement work to begin developing her own artistic work that eventually transformed into performance ‘Chelovek’. ‘Chelovek’ was first performed as graduate work at the Rose Bruford College, exploring the body in a scenic space with reference to oscillation that happens in the human soul presented through the artistic self-portrait. During next two and a half years performance had been developed and tested in various ways, sets, countries and implementations, but the topic always stayed the same - chelovek, who is it, and how to become one (can be translated from russian as ‘human’, ‘person’) After graduation, in 2017, Ksenia begin to work as an actress at the Bred In The Bone Theatre Studio, a multinational ensamble / laboratory, that traces its’ origins to the core of french, italian and polish physical theatre, working primarily on impulse work between partners and exploring musicality of the text and circumstances. With the theatre company, Ksenia has developed a performance, called The Ship, based on the adaptation of the Japanese 1920’ novel (‘The Crab Cannery Ship) by Takiji Kobayashi. The company had travelled in Europe, performing the show as well conducting workshops in Madrid, London and Paris. In 2018 Ksenia has moved back to Russia and is currently living in Moscow, where she is participating in Moscow Demidov Theatre Laboratory and undergoing through the training of Shorinji Kempo (japanese martial arts). Ksenia is also working and developing her solo-performance ‘Chelovek’ with intention to make it into full scale production to be taken on tour in 2019.
