ZaHaVa Sherez comes from a long lineage of immigrants and refugees who fled continents for survival. The cultures she has been exposed to taught her the magnificent differences between them, and most importantly, how profoundly alike we, humans, are.
Trained as a figurative/realistic sculptor, she created her first bronze in 1993, a sculpture called “Flower Arrangement” from her series “I Am So Many!” – www.zahavasherez.com/flower-arrangement
This began her journey as an activist using her art to raise consciousness about ‘the other’, the immigrant, and the refugee. In 2017 she started a new body of work, InBodied Light, with a message about all of humanity as One Race (https://zahavasherez.com/inbodied-light). This sculptural installation of Beings visually carries this message; each sculpture, being faceless and asexual, is both no one and everyone stating with their presence: We Are One.
An essential element of this work is light as it places the emphasis on the Vibrational Energy that connects all and everything. Choosing resin as a primary element, allows light to flow through and bounce off the highly textured surfaces. The finished sculptures are made of resin, bronze, mixed media, light, and various pigments to create a palate from light butter, through various oranges, all the way to dark amber.
These sculptures, individually or in small groups, have been shown in prestigious venues since 2020 throughout the US, Mexico, and China.
ZaHaVa is the recipient of numerous awards and has shown her work nationally from California to New York in such venues as: The Discovery Museum, CT; Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, NY; The American Artists Professional League, Salmagundi Club, NY; SculptureSite Gallery, CA; St. Mary’s College Museum of Art, CA, and many more. Internationally, she has exhibited in Paris, Corsica, China, and Mexico.
