Miranda Shen is a 15-year-old artist from Vaughan, Ontario. She primarily utilizes acrylic paint and graphite, as she finds both media effective in layering and controlling. Her artwork is often depicting still life or human features. She ensures that she has every shadow and highlight in its correct position and she strives to use a colour palette that reflects the subject matter while still being complementary. In addition, Miranda captures a sense of emotion in her portraits, since she finds beauty in an audience being able to recognize sentiments through an art piece. Her portraits are influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh, as she aspires to echo her feelings in each piece. These paintings tell a story without words being written on the canvas. In particular, her self-portraits are meant to be analyzed, with every person having their own thoughts of what the meaning could be. Miranda explores surrealism in these paintings and incorporates her personal beliefs and experiences through various symbols.
