Square Moon is the other world by Iris Satijn.
The non-New York based artist observes and questions the expressive power of art in conflict with the rigid reality of today's world. The abstraction of modern life in conflict with the inner world of dreams and imagination.
In her art, she explores the intersection between
the functional and expressionism, the convergence between the abstract and the
figurative. How does one determine the form of a work of art, viewed from the
perspective of the function of an artefact and the artist's expression. How far
apart can abstract art and figurative art be, but also how can they effectively
come together? In doing so, she examines the constant provocation between the
creator, the experiencer, and the viewer.
Who or what determines the ultimate
character of an art object? How important is its expressive potential? How
important is the realism of the real world and what is the contribution of the
inner world of experience? What is the intention of the artist as creator?
Is it an artistic expression or is it the
need to process the raw outside world into a legible art object? Is it not expression
but functionality?
Her cut-and-paste and painting work is her
therapy. Her therapy can be someone's imaginative dream world, but it can also
be someone else's crystallized nightmare.
