Emma Sadler Eriksson is predominantly an oil painter who has an obsessive interest in how the stories we’re told throughout our lives affect how we think, feel and respond to life’s everyday events. Currently based in Melbourne, Australia, Sadler Eriksson became infatuated with paintings from the renaissance period from an early age by how the old masters were able to capture human emotion and all of the intricacies of human life. After completing an Advanced Diploma in Visual Arts in 2019, Sadler Eriksson now focuses on creating figurative and portrait works that invite the viewer to question societal pressures and how women, in particular, are still held to deep-rooted ideologies that haven’t progressed in the modern world.
In the series ‘Eating Eve’, Sadler Eriksson looks at how the creation story projects shame onto women for seizing and embracing their desires. Through presenting multiple images of consuming “the forbidden apple”, she aims to inspire the viewer to consider a new way of embracing their aspirations. With women now just beginning to reclaim their power, Sadler Eriksson explores women acting shamelessly in their desires and wants without the ridicule that often accompanies these authentic impulses.
