Sara Sachs works on the fringe of fashion, art and design.
From 2009 to 2014, Sachs was the artistic director, together with painter Tal R, of fashion label Moonspoon Saloon, which blended fashion and the world of visual arts. Her work with fashion, combined with her interest in film, modern dance and theatre, translated into a series of performances that took place in various venues including Victoria Miro Gallery in London, The Swedish National Gallery in Stockholm and Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, amongst others. During this time, Sachs moved from Copenhagen to Los Angeles, where Moonspoon Saloon became a hit amongst celebrities like Prince, Björk and Lady Gaga.
Over the past four years, Sachs has been shifting her practice, moving away from fashion towards different visual languages such as collage, film and sculpture. In her work, which is based around the quirky characters she creates and the sets she deigns for them, Sachs bends appearance, gender and even species into a grotesque and ironic universe. She is currently working on a series of works based on what she calls ‘emotional design’, which explores the relationship between humans and objects beyond functionality. Her idiosyncratic design objects, just like her characters, are granted psychological qualities and are suggestive of emotional states, rather than possibilities of use. Her objects transform the private, domestic dimension into an eccentric theatrical setting that mirrors and shapes the intimate life of its owners.
Sachs lives and works between Los Angeles (U.S.) and Chamonix Mont-Blanc (FR).
