Erwin Rios
was born and raised in Chile. He has lived and worked in Austria since his
early youth.
During his
studies of art history and twenty-one years of experience in art exhibitions,
he has simultaneously and continuously developed as a painter. At first not
professionally, but out of an inner need to order thoughts and emotions and to
transport them from the inside to the outside. Using acrylic paints, sand,
cement and other materials, he brings his concerns to canvas.
The works
in the series "Quo vadis" (Where are you going) are a contemplation
of people. It begins with himself and everyday life and inevitably expands to
all forms of human interaction. "Quo vadis" paintings speak of people
who all have one thing in common: The discrimination, be it because of skin colour,
religion, social status, gender, sexual orientation …
"I see
every single person affected and I see what is going on inside people. Each
person is a unique individual and at the same time lives in constant
interaction with other people. This raises
questions: Who am I? How do I deal with myself and with other people - how does
it affect the whole? Ultimately, everyone is concerned with experiencing love,
appreciation and happiness. The first step to achieve this is to break down the walls in your
brain, broaden your perspective and open your heart," says Erwin Rios.
His
painting process is like a conversation. The canvas receives; it listens and
then continues to tell the story. The materials are like words, expanded
expressions through texture and a few harmoniously coordinated layers of
colour. When the words are not enough, the images are there. And the words are
no longer necessary.
