Dara Ricketts

Dara Ricketts is a Nigerian painter known for her vibrant and culturally rich artwork. Born Oludara Ricketts in Dublin, Ireland, her unique upbringing across Wales, Nigeria, and Ireland has profoundly influenced her artistic vision. This diverse cultural background is reflected in her dynamic compositions, which celebrate the essence of Nigerian youth culture.

From a young age, Dara was captivated by the world of art, drawing throughout her childhood. However, it wasn't until the pandemic in 2020 that she first tried painting. Initially a hobby to pass the time, painting soon became a profound mode of expression for Dara. Realising her calling, she decided to pursue painting professionally, leading her to apply to art schools. Today, she is an international student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, where she continues to hone her craft and expand her artistic horizons.

Dara's work is primarily executed in acrylics, a medium that allows her to vividly capture the energy and spirit of her subjects. Her proficiency extends to watercolour and oil paints, enabling her to experiment and diversify her portfolio. Each piece she creates is a testament to her deep connection to her heritage, characterised by bold colours, intricate patterns, and emotive narratives that depict the vibrancy of Nigerian youth.

The themes in Dara’s paintings are deeply rooted in her cultural experiences and observations. She draws inspiration from the everyday lives of young Nigerians, their fashion, music, and social interactions. Her art not only showcases the aesthetic beauty of her culture but also serves as a commentary on the evolving identity of Nigerian youth in a globalised world.
