I am Mala Ramcharan: The Woman of Barcode & QR Code Art.
In the past 30 years I have developed a distinctive artistic signature, called "The Barcode Art"
Welcome to my art journey: The Barcode & QR Code Art, where lines speak louder than words and stories take unexpected humorous turns!
Mala Ramcharan, born in Suriname and raised in the Netherlands.
Inspired by the barcode, I transform a visual language that tells a story about Humanity, Equality, Connection, inclusion, globalwarming and the Groubdbreaking Developments in the sociëty.
The barcode is an abstract translation of real information, with the punch card as its predecessor and the QR code (Quick Response) as its successor.
In my art, I translate this in my own way into realism and fiction, reflecting the innovative and constantly evolving society of our time in topics such as science, AI, inclusion, fashion, and the changing timeline of our era.
Through my art, I create awareness, stimulate self-reflection, and connect art with people and society.
My contribution to society is that for more than twenty years I am supporting underprivileged children with education and essential resources for a better and save future through my Shoe Project.
An additional element that makes my work unique is that the longer you look, the more hidden details and surprises reveal themselves.
After my studies, and before becoming a full-time artist, I worked at, universty in Delft, Philips, and for over thirty years at a secondary school and college. I am a Certified Professional Artist with the title Signature Artist (IWS USA) and have received various honorable mentions, certificate, and trophies, including Artist of the Year awards, and the WAA - Woman Art Award for my distinctive style, depth, and narrative art.
Own signature
After studying visual arts for some time and experimenting with various techniques, I was ready to develop my own unique signature and style. Around 1995, I discovered the complexity of the barcode. AH was the first store in the Netherlands to introduce it in 1976. I was fascinated by the abstraction and hidden information behind the seemingly simple lines, with their unexpected complexity. I saw in this the changing sociëty and a reflection of life itself: beautiful and challenging. You have to make it magical, and live it beautifully like a frame you’ll look back on with a smile
Environment plays a role
Mala: I capture groundbreaking developments and current themes in society in the fields of science, AI, inclusion, climate change, history, and current trends. But my environment also plays a role. Everything that triggers me, both positive or what unsettles me, I transform into various humorous scenes, because I consider humor an important factor in life. And if you look at my work on your wall and it brings a smile, then that is my success, and that happens a lot.
In the art world, I am recognized as a pioneer of my unique style, the woman of barcode art and that forms my distinctive, unique signature. With my creativity and distinctive, unique signature, I have developed a personal voice as an artist that touches people through recognition and acknowledgment.”
Depth
I am known for transforming barcodes and QR codes in this unique way. My work is distinctive in style, has depth, and a recognizable visual language. It reflects the society with its continuously changing, groundbreaking developments and current themes. Through my art, I try to create awareness, evoke self-reflection, and connect with people and society. I also contribute by supporting underprivileged children with education and essential resources. I started a Shoe Project 20 years ago. This gives me energy and gives my work a powerful impact.
Inspiring youth
I am exhibiting work internationally at fairs, art events, both online and physically, in galleries, through art lending, and on my own website. “My goal is to expand my voice internationally, to create a mark through art critics and museums. To bring my story to a large audience, but above all to inspire and encourage young people with new insights.
As humans, every action we take shapes the world around us. But we have the capability to make choices, so choose wisely.
