Slate is an acrylic painter largely working in the still life genre. In addition to contemporary techniques, he often employs strategies and techniques usually found in Baroque painting. Like artists of that era, he tries to make still lives about other topics. The excesses of the Baroque aptly describe our own deranged and decadent time period. For the past few years, he has been painting still lives about contemporary events. Each painting is themed for both the month in which it was created and ongoing issues. Many doom-scrolling sessions result in some of the texts or objects that are chosen, with the emergent themes often tragic, comic, poetic, and nonsensical. The series is an attempt at the search for order and comprehension in a world that increasingly has neither.
