Paul Sabyan is a Canadian mixed-media artist whose work explores the intersection of architecture, history, and cultural memory. Working from his own photographic and architectural research gathered through travel, he transforms historic buildings and urban landscapes into layered contemporary compositions that examine the enduring relationship between place and human experience.
Using acrylic, oil, collage, digital transfers, and architectural drawings on wood panel and canvas, Sabyan deconstructs buildings into visual palimpsests where floor plans, elevations, ornament, and texture coexist. Rather than depicting architecture as static monuments, his work investigates how buildings accumulate memory, history, and cultural identity over time.
His recent series draws inspiration from locations including Japan, Italy, Portugal, Mexico, and Canada, combining personal observation with architectural analysis to create works that exist between representation and abstraction. Influenced by architectural drawing, contemporary mixed media, and the compositional restraint of Japanese woodblock prints, Sabyan's practice invites viewers to reconsider familiar landmarks as living repositories of culture and memory.
