Pictures drawn by Mari Nishimura are often described as "powerful." When she stands in front of the canvas, she feels a sort of magical power and it leads her to convey her message. She first covers her canvas with sand gathered from shrines as a foundation to make her canvas “sacred”. Then, aside from drawing a rough sketch, she uses her hands and fingers to paint in layers. Having been inspired by dragons since childhood, dragons are essential elements for her when expressing her inner emotions on canvas. She says, “Even though dragons have been historically regarded as mythical monsters in Japan and in China, dragons are gentle, precious, and beautiful entities to me. My life goal is to paint dragons that no one has ever seen or has ever imagined in their lives.” She believes that life consists of hardships, sorrows with the mixture of happiness. She expresses all those feelings in her works through dragons. People often shed in tears when they observe her works since they can synchronize their lives with her art. Mari Nishimura’s works incorporate Japanese style with contemporary aspects. Today, her “dragons” are loved by people all over the world.
