Andrea Morein, born in Vienna, Austria
Her childhood was spent in Frankfurt/Main, where her East European parents settled after an odyssey through various European countries. During her school-years, she came in contact with Expressionist Dance and Improvisational Dance at the Waltraud Luley Studio, which was to influence her future artistic development. After her matriculation in 1969, she studied acting and movement with various teachers in Tel Aviv. She moved on to London to complete her studies of theatre directing in 1973. She directed her first productions and explored new forms of theatre & movement expression. After her move to Berlin at the end of the Seventies, she turned more towards Performance Art including movement & visual elements.
Since 1997, Andrea’s work shifts entirely to the visual & media arts. Her installations, videos, drawings & photographic works are related to movement, investigate inner and outer spaces & question the medium itself as a platform for memory and historicity. (see below) She has a strong visual and philosophical interest in architecture, poetics and process-oriented aesthetics.
In 2020, she settled back in Berlin after stations in Tel Aviv, Java, Amsterdam & Cologne. Her artistic practice is focussed on embodied arts, collage, photography, gestural drawing. She examines how personal experience of one's history can be expanded & embedded in a larger context of community & historicity.
Another aspect of her artistic & curatorial practice is exploring the interconnectedness in human & spatial relationships.
In 2001, she founded Odalisque – Space for Art & Embodiment in Berlin, a showroom presenting international artists & interdisciplinary projects as well as featuring her own recent work.
