Ieva Mediodia (b. 1968) is an established Lithuanian artist.
Mediodia primarily works in the medium of painting, however, her practice expands
to various experimentations on paper that exceed the traditional confines of
the medium.
Mediodia received a BFA in painting from the Vilnius Academy of
Arts in 1992. After, she left Lithuania to study contemporary painting at an
MFA program at Hunter College New York.
Since graduating from Hunter College (2001), she has
participated internationally in numerous exhibitions in France, Finland,
Romania, Italy, as well as many in Lithuania and the USA. Notably, Mediodia was
represented by the prominent Annina Nosei gallery in Chelsea, New York, which
has exposed her work to a larger audience in Europe and the US.
During her career, the artist received the following awards: Soros
Foundation Grant for the show “Nus,” Corbas Center for Arts Polaris, Lyon (1994);
The Annual State Scholarship of Lithuania (1994-5); Grant of the Westerly
Trust, London (1996); Graf Travel Grant to Pompeii, Hunter College, New York (2001);
and residency studio from the Robert Pardo and Agora Foundation, Hudson, New York (2012).
Her works are in the public collections of the Lewben Art
Foundation (Vilnius) and MO museum (Vilnius).
Mediodia’s work is a hybrid of painting and drawing and
sometimes installation, accomplished with fluid acrylics and ink using
paintbrush, pen, and airbrush on various surfaces—mostly on canvas, Mylar, and
translucent acetate paper. One of the core themes of Mediodia’s art is global
warming. The issue of climate emergency is particularly prominent in the
series of works recently presented in the exhibition The Sea of Ice at
the Room Gallery, Vilnius. Nonetheless, a VR artwork called Arktikaantarktika,
created in collaboration with the artist Justyna Gorowska’s, considers how
animation and virtual reality can better communicate global warming concerns,
especially in regards to inaccessible locations. This work is currently on view at the Un/Mute exhibition, the Austrian Cultural Forum, NY.
