David Martinello Bio:
Art and Craft are both considerations of David Martinello and his work is informed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University and years working as a carpenter. He has curated at galleries and has participated in many shows with his painting and sculpture, with a commission for permanent public art installation being his latest showing.
David’s main preoccupation is with wood as a material, and it informs all of his work. By gathering observations about wood, working to highlight its esoteric attributes David has been referred to as ‘A See-er’ because of his ability to note and distill wood’s notable attributes through his gestural actions.
Inspired by the development of techniques for creative growth, David’s Art is crafted out of a curation of several mediums, not just wood. By drawing together impressions found within the attributes of wood, and coupling them with the use of paint and other mediums (like digital representation) wooden characteristics evolve into a lyrical impasto-like vocabulary. By leveraging the mechanics of meaning between art and craft, David’s practice highlights wood’s attributes to speak to our relationship to the wood, and in turn forests.
David’s exploration of wood not only is through his abstract sculptures and paintings on board, but also via his company Alternative Woodworks, which produces unique modern-rustic furniture. He’s also published a book of poetry, Hedged Nothing and is currently pursuing a thesis ‘Forest in the Face of Colour’ for several projects in the near future.
