Monika Maroziene is a visionary Lithuanian photographer whose work merges art and science. With a master’s degree in chemistry and a deep artistic drive, she bridges these two fields to create a photographic style that is both technical and poetic.
Always exploring ways to incorporate her scientific background, she experiments with melting pine tree resin onto her prints. This adds a tactile quality, warmth, and durability to her work. The resin acts as both a preservative and a nostalgic reference to the Amber Coast—her childhood landscape and a lasting source of inspiration.
Her latest project, “Woman and The Sea”, embodies this fusion. Using pine tree resin—not fossilised amber—she enhances her black-and-white photographs with a soft yellow hue and antioxidant properties. The result preserves the images while anchoring them in memories of sunlit shores. For Monika, amber symbolises beauty and preservation, mirroring the complexity and strength of her female subjects, much like the serene yet wild landscape of the Curonian Spit.
Her photographs, rich in poetic irony and quiet melancholy, offer deep introspection. “Through my lens, I capture moments to liberate myself from the past,” she reflects. Her connection to childhood solitude and nature—the calls of seagulls, the rhythm of the sea—echoes throughout her work. Black-and-white, she says, offers distance from reality while evoking longing and nostalgia. “I often dream of the Amber Coast, wishing it could last forever.”
