R. Scott MacLeay holds a Master of Science degree in economics from the London School of Economics and left his doctoral studies to pursue a career in photography in Vancouver, moving to Paris in 1979 to dedicate himself full time to his exhibition work. He has exhibited widely in galleries and national museums in North and South America, Europe and Japan and his images are present in numerous private and museum collections.
His passion for video art began in the early 1980s and in 1985 he was named Director of the Center for Media Art and Photography (CMAP) of the American Center in Paris where he devoted himself to producing audio-visual projects and developing cutting-edge pedagogical programs for young artists.
He left the world of analogue photography in 1988 to compose contemporary music for video art, special format cinema and contemporary dance as well as for his musical research group Private Circus, an activity that sparked his interest in digital imagery and on-line technologies.
Since moving to Brazil in 2010 he divides his time between new media creations (photo and video), musical composition for installations and exhibitions and the exploration of on-line interactivity. Over the past 8 years his video works have been included in festivals worldwide and won awards in London, Paris, Cannes, Berlin, Milan, Florence, Venice, Amsterdam, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shanghai (details in the complete biography link below).
He is the author of the book of essays “Pensar, Sentir e Ver: Percepção e Processo na Fotografia” (2015 Editora Photos), the photography/new media books devoted to his work “Quadrichromie 1978-1988” (2018 Creative Process), “Encounters in the Right and Left Hemispheres” (2020 Creative Process), “Tropical Interference” (2023 Creative Process), “Challenged” (2024 Creative Process), the book of social commentaries “Thoughts On...” (2022 Creative Process) and the book of illustrations and texts “Futility as Rebirth” (2022 Creative Process).
