Barton Lewis was born into a family of artists and teachers in Urbana, Illinois, and graduated high school from the North Carolina School of the Arts. He attended The Juilliard School, where he received a B.M. in music composition, and has a B.A. in English literature from Columbia University. Barton briefly pursued a career in musical theater after college, but devoted himself to filmmaking full-time in the 1990s. He has had public showings of his work in New York City, Paris, Szczecin, Poland, and Portland, Oregon.Barton took up still photography in 2017 to capture wall cuts in the New York City transit system, the subject of one of his films, as large format prints. His more recent photographic work explores the textures, colors and shapes of distressed urban surfaces, an outgrowth of his films on this subject, but as composite digital files rendered as pixel-dense and rich images capable of reproduction at their actual size.
