Alexander Brodsky (b. 1955) – an architect and an artist, one of
founders of late-Soviet “paper architecture” movement. His artistic method is based
upon synthesis of art and architecture.
Some of his art objects, such as “The Lonely Chess Player's Shelter”
constructed for 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, possess the architectural
functions: they are proper for living, they have walls and roof, and one can
enter them to hide from tough weather as well as move inside them and enjoy
sightseeing from their tops.
In the meantime, his buildings and interiors are deeply metaphoric,
they’re integrated into landscape or urban space; they are laced with themes of
memory, time, reflections about human and his place on earth.
Alexander Brodsky’s installation “Coma” won grand-prix of Triennale
Milano in 2001. In the years of 2016 and 2006, he represented Russia at 15th
Venice Architecture Biennale. His early architectural etchings won the prizes
of Central Glass Company Competition, Shinkenchiku Competition, and East Meets West
in Design Competition. His works in Russia received the first prize of The ARCH
Moscow exhibition-forum, Innovation Award and Kandinsky Prize.
