REBECCA KOULSTERRAEI
Bolognese, raised by an Istrian - Italian family exiled from its homeland after the Il World War.
She started painting and drawing at the age of two, and never stopped.
She spent long periods of her life in Belgium, UK, Sweden, Spain, and the U.S.A..
While travelling across Europe, South America, and Japan, she could observe and inject in herself the culture, the art, and the nature she was surrounded by.
She has elaborated a dreamlike, childish style experimenting sculptin, painting and drawing with acrylic, pencils, watercolours, das, and daily materials like Lego, ironwire, pearls and small
lights.
Her main character is called CUORICINA, a very uncool heart, mostly expressing the fatigue of living on Planet (H)eart(h) and rising up everytime she moved from one country to another, looking for a place to call «HOME».
In this constant quest to feel part of the Planet, RK has alternately experimented with a more visceral and partially abstract painting style, inspired by natural chemical processes and landscapes.
In the last two years, feeling the pressure of smartphone screens, she has focused on micro-scale pictorial and figurative work.
Rebecca Koulsterraei began exhibing in The Netherlands at the age of ten. From then on she took part in many collective exhibitions with other artists from all over the world.
Very shy, and jealous of her privacy, while visiting the Centro Cultural de Belem (Portugal), in 2010, she had an epiphany about her pseudonym.
«REBECCA» = bond, net, she who captivates with her charm or she who has a joyful heart, and
«KOULSTERRAEl», a linguistic play of words that combines «COOL», «STAR», «RAY», like a cool ray of star.
