“Silence is something that comes from the heart, not from outside. Silence doesn’t mean not
talking and not doing things; It means you’re not disturbed inside. If you’re truly silent,
Then no matter what situation you find yourself in you can enjoy the silence.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh
Through introspection, mourning, remembrance, and celebration of emptiness and silence, Chris
Koehn seeks to materialize emotions with minimal elements and chromatics, a pause. Inspired by
Japanese simplicity, creating emptiness with consciousness and intention. Much like a tea room,
his art invites emotional evolution through minimalistic arrangements. Utilizing negative space, his
compositions evoke the essence of Ikebana.
Drawing inspiration from Mies van der Rohe’s architectural ethos of removing unnecessary
elements, Brian Eno's musical process in embracing silence by removing notes, and Eduardo
Chillida ’s embrace of emptiness and void spaces , Chris Koehn journey as an artist, architect,
musician, and human transcends technical virtuosity. Instead, it delves inward, seeking to heal and
connect with the creative cosmos. Viewing himself as a selfless conduit rather than merely an artist,
"I recognize that art and ideas already exist; our role is to capture them through our senses and
manifest them."
Chris Koehn studied architecture in UNAM,
ETSAM Politecnico Madrid & Universidad Iberoamericana.
