Gongsan Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1957 and immigrated to the United States in 1997. She earned her BFA from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University. She has been a member of Soho20 Gallery in New York since 2012 and became a national member of A.I.R. Gallery in New York in 2024.
Her work explores political themes, often centered on the sorrow and injustice surrounding her divided homeland. She uses burning techniques on fabric and other materials as a visceral method to express grief, protest repression, and honor the innocent lives lost in North Korea.
Kim received a Special Award from Passion for Freedom in London in 2018. Her work has been featured in international exhibitions including Political Art in Warsaw, Poland; Leeso Kunsthal in Denmark; the Arte Laguna Prize in Venice, Italy; the Prague International Exhibition in the Czech Republic; and Gallery Korea in New York.
She has held solo exhibitions at Soho20 Gallery in New York, Korea Monitor Gallery in Virginia, the Korean Embassy in Washington, D.C., Workhouse Arts Center in Virginia, and Gallery All in Seoul, Korea. Her work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions across the U.S. and abroad.
