Ioannis Karounis is a performer,
choreographer and co-artistic director of the International Dance Film Festival
- ATHENS VIDEO DANCE PROJECT. He is also a filmmaker with a keen interest in
video and documentaries. He studied dance in Jacob’s Pillow Dance School
(Massachusetts - US), in National School of Dance (Greece) and in Kontaxaki
Professional Dance School (Greece).
He has studied performance in the University of Athens. Most recently,
he has collaborated with Marina Abramovic Institute, NEON Organization, Benaki
Museum, National Museum of Contemporary Art (Greece), National Theater of
Norway, Niarchos Foundation, Documenta 14 (Athens-Kassel ), stART - Robert
Bosch Stiftung, David Dorfman Company NYC, XVII Festival International de Danza
Contemporanea (Mexico), Greek Festival, National Theater of Greece,
International Dance Festival of South Korea, Festival Hostscena (ALESUND NORWAY), Hellenic Dance Company,
Biennale Athens AB5to6, Echo Echo Dance Festival (Ireland), Off Europa Festival
(Germany), Arc for Dance International Festival, Greek Contemporary Dance
Platform, Dance Days Chania (Greece) etc. He has collaborated with many artists
from Greece and abroad such as Marina Abramovic, David Zabrano, Ted Stoffer,
Rafika Chawishe, Michael Kliën, Ermira Goro, Georgia Sagri, Athanasia
Kanellopoulou, Hermes Malkotsis, Apostolia Papadamaki etc.
He has taught contemporary dance in National Dance School, University of
Athens, Athens School of Fine Arts, Dance Cultural Center, EU Programs (Action
1&2) and in many other places in Greece and abroad. He is a founding member
of BelleVille non-profit organisation, Athens Video Dance Project, Society of
Dance, Dancetheater.gr and Saltator Physical Dance Group. He is an active and
inspired performer, choreographer and dance teacher with a great interest in
martial arts and yoga.
